Today marks 29 years after the Tamishi battle in occupied Abkhazia region of Georgia. Georgian Defense Forces commemorated fallen soldiers at Heroes Square in Tbilisi.

Chairman of the parliamentary Defense and Security Committee Irakli Beraia, Head of the Veterans Affairs Department Koba Kobaladze, Chairman of the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic Ruslan Abashidze and Abkahzia war participants visited the memorial.

On July 2, 1993 at 05.00 a.m. the Abkhazian side landed assault forces numbering 600 men near the borough Tamishi. The Russian military vessel provided naval support for the Abkhazian battalion, which carried out the first offensive against the Georgian combat units positioned at Tamishi, Labrasa and Upper Kintkhi at dawn. Along with the landing troops, Abkhazian units of Ochamchire mobilized the forces. The detachment heading from Chqirdi attacked a part of the Georgian Internal Security Forces from the north.

The attack was so unexpected that all the Georgian warriors reinforced at battle positions died. First, Dusheti Battalion was attacked that resulted in the death of 52 Georgian militants. Following several day-long hostilities, around 300 warriors fell on the battlefield. Regardless of a huge loss, the Georgian military could repel the enemy and maintain combat positions.
