Georgia to launch comprehensive state language course in universities by end of August

The Commission for the Revival of Georgian Language Study in Universities will deliver a comprehensive undergraduate-level Georgian language course to universities nationwide by the end of August.

Chaired by Minister of Education, Science, and Youth Affairs Givi Mikanadze, and attended by his Deputy Zviad Gabisonia, the Commission convened its inaugural meeting on Friday.

During the meeting, the Minister expressed his gratitude to the commission members for their collaboration and underscored the vital importance of teaching the Georgian language at the university level.

Givi Mikanadze highlighted that the Georgian Parliament, during its spring session, made a “historic decision” to restore Georgian language study at universities. He emphasised that teaching in occupied Abkhazia will continue in the Abkhazian language, which is also recognised as the state language.

“This decision reflects the government’s political vision—to nurture and strengthen the Abkhazian language. Simultaneously, the Ministry will actively work to integrate Georgian as a core subject in undergraduate curricula and ensure it is taught to the highest standards,” Mikanadze stated.

The Minister also emphasised the importance of bolstering the Zurab Zhvania School of Public Administration and promoting the development of Georgian studies centres abroad.

On June 10, the Georgian Parliament approved amendments to the Law on Higher Education, mandating that all undergraduate students must complete a dedicated Georgian language course at their universities.
