Georgia church marks Svetitskhovloba

On October 14, Georgia celebrates Svetitskhovloba, a day of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, recognized as the home of Christ’s mantle. His Holiness and Beatitude, Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, will lead a liturgy at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.

The Georgian Orthodox Church announced in a statement that all celebrations had been cancelled because of the Vake Park tragedy. An accident claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl, who was electrocuted along with two other teens on October 13 while attempting to retrieve a ball that had fallen into the Vake Park fountain.

Svetitskhovloba is celebrated twice a year, on October 14 and July 13. It dates back to the 4th century.
