GD Chair: If President Zourabichvili had dignity, she would resign immediately

Irakli Kobakhidze, the chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, has stated that the Constitutional Court confirmed that President Salome Zourabichvili violated the Constitution multiple times, intentionally and grossly, opposing the constitutional order and the system of parliamentary governance.

He said that Zourabichvili betrayed the Constitution and the oath taken on it.

“In the current week, a majority of deputies elected by the Georgian people in 2020 will affirm that Salome Zourabichvili is no longer worth holding the honourable position of the President of Georgia. If Salome Zourabichvili had her basic dignity, she would promptly resign from the presidency after the Constitutional Court’s ruling. However, Zourabichvili is not independent in her decisions, and she cannot resign without the consent of those forces that pushed her to breach the Constitution,” Kobakhidze stated.

He mentioned that by the end of the current session week, the parliament will hold a vote on the resignation of Zourabichvili through impeachment. While acknowledging that there may not be enough votes for impeachment, Kobakhidze sees the proceedings as a success in holding the President accountable for violating the Constitution.

“Regardless of how the impeachment procedure ends, the goal has been achieved – Zourabichvili’s violation of the Constitution has been addressed, and it will have a long-term preventive effect on the proper functioning of the governance system,” he added.

The Constitutional Court of Georgia on Monday ruled that President Salome Zourabichvili violated the Constitution. Six out of nine members of the plenum supported the decision. Additionally, the opinions of three members of the plenum—Irina Imerlishvili, Giorgi Kverenchkhiladze, and Teimuraz Tughushi—will be attached to the judgment.
