Gakharia’s Sharashidze: President at war voices certain support; I don’t believe his statement is against Georgia
Gakharia for Georgia party’s Political Council member, Giorgi Sharashidze, declared that human rights violations and democratic regression in Georgia are “well known even without Zelenskyy”.
According to him, support expressed by the president of a country at war should not be perceived as criticism.
“When a president of a country at war expresses certain support, I don’t think it’s a statement against our country, especially when our friends are concerned about the situation in Georgia.
Really, no one can deny, except Georgian Dream, that human rights and the rule of law are not protected in Georgia today. Under GD’s conditions, Georgia is losing its European future, because the government is doing everything to isolate our country and declare the country’s friends as enemies, whilst allying with whoever the real enemy is. Accordingly, nothing is surprising here, but even without Zelenskyy’s involvement, we will defend our country’s European future. This doesn’t depend only on the Georgian Dream.
According to him, GD has seized power today, though this is temporary, and the Georgian people will still defend their European future.
“This isn’t criticism, but a statement made from a sympathiser’s position. When a friend is concerned about Georgia, this is only welcome. The main thing is what we call criticism. I’m convinced this is a statement made from a sympathiser’s position; there’s no need for great fuss about this.
We must remember that Georgia was part of the Associated Trio together with Ukraine and Moldova, so don’t present it as if Ukraine has no interest in whether Georgia will be a member of the European family or not. Whoever it might be, I’m convinced everyone will be troubled by the situation that exists in Georgia today, including in terms of human rights violations,” Sharashidze declared.
At the UN General Assembly, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared, “We have already lost Georgia in Europe. Human Rights and the European nature and the state system are only shrinking there. Europe cannot afford to lose Moldova either.”
