Fundamental rights still not adequately protected, says President

“This day serves as a reminder to all of humanity that inhumane thinking might lead to horrific events akin to the Holocaust,” said Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili in a statement commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

As the President points out, people in the twenty-first century are still not properly safeguarded against the inviolability of their fundamental rights.

“On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we commemorate the millions of innocent victims who suffered as a result of humanity’s ideological decay. Following the unearthing of Holocaust crimes, we feel a heightened sense of anguish and guilt. Despite the atrocities of the Holocaust, human beings in the twenty-first century are still not adequately protected from the inviolability of fundamental rights owing to conflicts and ideological disputes. Today serves as a further warning to humanity never to allow the spread of inhumane ideologies, which may have disastrous consequences, such as the Holocaust,” Zourabichvili said.
