Former US Ambassador: Intervention by civil society, new elections could ease tensions

Former US Ambassador to Georgia, William Courtney echoed the recent developments in Georgia. He noted that the country was turning away from the road to the West.

“Political setbacks – refusal of some to take parliamentary seats, persistent election flaws, snubbing of EU-brokered compromise – suggest Georgia is veering off westward path and losing democratic momentum. Perhaps intervention by civil society and new elections could ease tensions”, Courtney tweeted.

The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party annulled the EU-brokered April 19 Agreement on July 28. The GD Chair Irakli Kobakhidze said the agreement completed its mission and exhausted itself 100 days after signing as the majority of the opposition politicians abstained from joining it.

European Council President Charles Michel mediated the April 19 Agreement among the Georgian parties to end the political crisis in Georgia.
