Foreign Committee Chair: India’s full embassy in Tbilisi marks rapid rise in bilateral relations

The Georgian parliamentary delegation held a meeting today with the Speaker of the Indian Parliament, followed by a working lunch with India’s Minister of External Affairs. According to Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee and a member of the delegation, the visit marks one of Georgia’s high-level engagements with India.

Samkharadze highlighted the rapid progress in bilateral ties in recent years.

“Relations have been developing dynamically, as evidenced by India’s decision to open a full-fledged embassy in Tbilisi. The embassy has been formally established, and we are now awaiting the appointment of an ambassador,” he said.

According to Samkharadze, discussions focused on strengthening economic cooperation, current geopolitical developments, and international security.

“Our positions coincide on key principles of international law, which creates a strong foundation for further deepening our relationship. India is now the world’s most populous country, and its political and economic influence is steadily increasing. Its economic growth in recent years has been remarkable, and the potential for further expansion is significant,” he noted.

Samkharadze emphasized the need to increase trade between Georgia and India.

“Currently, trade turnover stands at 200 million GEL, which is not a satisfactory number. We provided our Indian colleagues with information on developments in the occupied territories and the security situation in the Black Sea region. The meetings were productive and meaningful, and we hope this visit will further energize Georgian-Indian relations,” he added.
