For Georgia's Sharashidze: Naming hour of overthrow is irresponsible
“Now they are even naming the exact hour when they will overthrow the ‘Dream.’ Such statements are irresponsible and frivolous for a politician, and any comparison with Nepal is utterly unthinkable,” Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia — For Georgia party, has criticized calls by some opposition figures.
Asked about remarks by Paata Burchuladze, leader of the Rustaveli Avenue movement, who stated that: “If they [GD] possess even a modicum of sense, several rally organisers must remain out of prison to ensure the protest remains manageable, that the crowds don’t become uncontrollable. We’ve already witnessed unmanageable crowds in Nepal… In my view, it will already be over by 8 o’clock. Power must have been transferred by then. ”
“ The main thing for us is to defeat and weaken the ‘Dream’ peacefully, and we are doing this through elections. It is frivolous to name specific dates — now they are even naming hours at which the ‘Dream’ will be overthrown,” Sharashidze said.
Sharashidze acknowledged his respect for Burchuladze but described the public timing as “an irresponsible statement on the part of a politician.” He added that anyone deliberately instigating unrest would be acting against the country’s interests.
“We are all called to defeat the ‘Dream’ and remove the usurped government,” he said, distinguishing his party’s electoral approach from others that, he said, have “chosen a different path.” He warned those who set public expectations about a specific date and time should accept responsibility if those expectations are not met.
Sharashidze said his party supports peaceful protest and has participated in demonstrations demanding new parliamentary elections and the release of alleged political prisoners.
“But we cannot be part of such calls — it is frivolous and wrong; it creates risks of civil conflict in society. This is not in the interests of our country,” he added.
