“For centuries, Georgia has connected Europe and Asia; the Black Sea coast has always been a meeting place for different civilisations and cultures. This is precisely what has given Georgia its uniqueness, experience and distinctive characteristics. When we see the world changing and global trade routes being reconfigured, Georgia is right here and ready to play an important role in developing the Middle Corridor, which is significant for both Europe and Asia,” Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili stated during a panel discussion on “Rewiring Global Trade” within the framework of the Tbilisi Silk Road Forum.

According to her, since gaining independence, Georgia has been working closely with the European Union for decades.

“Georgia has been an associated partner of the European Union since 2014. We have a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the EU, which enables us to benefit from the advantages of free trade. Additionally, we are developing cooperation and partnerships with various actors, not only regional neighbours but countries across the world. Georgia already has 16 free trade agreements, with China, CIS countries, neighbouring countries and the United Arab Emirates,” Maka Botchorishvili stated.

According to her, Georgia has maintained strategic partnerships with Azerbaijan and Turkiye for decades, including significant projects already implemented that add great value to the Middle Corridor, as they concern transport connectivity.

“We also have a strategic partnership with Armenia. We face a new reality in the South Caucasus, and against this backdrop, the region gains additional value. We welcome the developing relationship between Azerbaijan and Armenia. It was very pleasing to see three prime ministers standing together on today’s stage. Everything was different two years ago, and today, prime ministers are thanking one another. We see the dynamics in the region which create opportunities for the South Caucasus.

This is a new reality we can exploit, an opportunity for everyone. The South Caucasus is globally small, yet a vital region not only for Europe and Asia but at the global level. We are attractive and have an open economy.

When we look at Georgia’s figures, Georgia’s economic development is impressive. These numerical indicators are the result of structural reforms implemented over decades. Low corruption, an open economy and low taxes open doors to investors. We take great pride in this and work very diligently to make Georgia even more attractive to the international community. We are developing partnerships, and this is vitally important for the development of the Middle Corridor,” Maka Botchorishvili stated.
