EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, mandated Foreign Ministers of Austria, Lithuania and Romania to visit the South Caucasus region.

Alexander Schallenberg, Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria, Lithuanian FM Gabrielius Landsbergis and Romanian FM Bogdan Aurescu will visit Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia on June 25-26, said Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.

According to the FM, the main focus during the meetings would be the regional security risks and territorial conflict-related threats.

David Zalkaliani said that the involvement of Europe and the US in conflict resolution played a significant role.

“The Russian Federation used to take advantage from wakening their involvement, sometimes. This opportunity has to be reduced to the minimum,” Zalkaliani claimed.

Foreign Minister claimed that the format of the regional trio – Armenia-Georgia-Azerbaijan – should further develop to ensure the region’s attractiveness.

The visit will convey the EU’s support to three South Caucasus countries ahead of the Eastern Partnership summit.
