FM emphasises importance of upholding democratic processes at CoE ministerial

“We will use the platform of the Council of Europe Ministerial to raise all the pressing issues on Georgia’s agenda. Once again, we will affirm that, in the name of democracy, democratic processes within our country must be protected and not be obstructed,” stated Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Botchorishvili.

Speaking ahead of the event, Bochorishvili highlighted that the Ministerial is a vital annual gathering in which Georgia, as a member state of the Council of Europe, actively participates.

“We will use this platform to voice all issues currently on Georgia’s agenda. The challenges we face—both in terms of security and stability—pose significant threats to our nation. We will reiterate our stance and emphasise that, in the name of democracy, democratic processes should never be hindered or ignored. Ensuring the protection of these processes is of paramount importance,” Botchorishvili stated.

Furthermore, she underscored that the issue of occupation remains a persistent topic within the Council of Europe and will be prominently reflected in the ministerial deliberations.

“When discussing occupation, its consequences, human rights conditions in occupied territories, and the pursuit of peaceful conflict resolution, our primary focus is leveraging international institutions and opportunities to draw global attention to this critical issue. The occupation of Georgia is a constant agenda item within the Council, and we especially use this platform to highlight the ongoing human rights violations. This subject will undoubtedly be included in the official ministerial documents,” Botchorishvili added.

The 134th session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe convened in Luxembourg on May 13-14, with Georgia’s Foreign Minister, Maka Botchorishvili, participating. She will address the assembly and partake in a thematic discussion at the invitation of Xavier Bettel, Chair of the Committee of Ministers, Luxembourg’s Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. The discussion will focus on the Council of Europe Secretary General’s initiative: “Towards A New Democratic Pact for Europe.”
