Family of Vazha Gaprindashvili releases special statement

The family of Doctor Vazha Gaprindashvili, kept in imprisonment by the occupied regime, released a special statement based on which different activities will be held permanently for the release of the illegally imprisoned doctor. The activities will be organized by a special group. Also, the family will continue straggling with use of all the available international and legal mechanisms.

At the initiative of Vazha Gaprindashvili’s family, the working group established with the purpose of keeping active communication with the public will be coordinated by Giorgi Kekelidze, a writer and director of the National Library.

“Working carefully, free of populism and in protection of state interests is needed now,” the family said in the statement.

Writers, representatives of the Georgian Orthodox Church and religious and ethnic minorities will gather at National Library on the occasion of the opening of New Year Book Festival at 7 PM on December 27.

On December 29, freedom signal will be given by cars with audible beeping in Georgia and all cities in the world where Georgian emigrants live, Tatia Gaprindashvili, daughter of the imprisoned doctor said during a press conference.

The occupied Tskhinvali court sentenced Vazha Gaprindashvili to one year and nine-months to prison during the trial on December 20.

Tbilisi-based doctor Vazha Gaprindashvili was illegally detained by Russian occupation forces near the occupation line with Akhalgori Municipality on November 9. He was sent to two-month pretrial detention on November 15.

Vazha Gaprindashvili was charged with “illegally crossing the border” under article 322 of the criminal code of Russia.
