Ex-president Zourabichvili condemns investigation commission and its repressive intentions
Former President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, sharply criticised the parliamentary temporary investigation commission, studying activities of the 2003-2012 government and its officials, asserting that it was created solely to summon politicians who refuse to appear, thereby rendering the commission illegitimate. She stated that its true purpose is to provide an opportunity to impose fines or detain people, rather than uncover any genuine truth.
“At no point should anyone believe that this investigation commission was set up to establish some truth, something that has remained unconfirmed for 12 years or more. Its real purpose has been to summon politicians, who then refuse to participate. The commission was created so that these politicians could be fined or detained,” Zourabichvili declared during today’s briefing.
She explained that the reluctance of politicians to appear before the commission is understandable, given its illegitimate status. Both the parliament and the commission itself lack legitimacy, which undermines their authority.
“A new wave has begun and continues, targeting politicians. This investigative commission was set up for that very purpose. No one should believe it was created to uncover the truth. Instead, it was designed to summon politicians, who, understandably, refuse to comply because both the parliament and the commission are illegitimate. This process is then used as a pretext to fine or detain them. This wave is ongoing and represents one of the new forms of repression,” Zourabichvili emphasised.
