Ex-President Saakashvili: History made me symbol of Georgia’s independence; GD punishes me for this
Georgia’s former, now jailed President Mikheil Saakashvili states that he was questioned today in connection with the October 4 events.
As Saakashvili wrote on social media, new charges are now being brought against him.
“The shark case against me. Today, my farcical ‘interrogation’ regarding the October 4 events was conducted at the initiative of the so-called ‘Prosecutor’s Office’ named after judge Partskhaladze-Romanov. On October 4, hundreds of thousands of people gathered on Rustaveli Avenue, and it was this popular assembly that largely determined the boycott of the so-called local elections. Many very worthy people have been arrested in connection with this case, which is purely political in nature, and now they’re coming after me.
I have now been in prison for five years on fabricated charges. I told the representatives of this Russian provincial tyranny that they represent the enemies of Georgia. They questioned me about my connection to the alleged attempted coup, even though I have been held, for the past five years, in virtually complete isolation, under conditions prohibiting telephone contact, and under constant audio and video surveillance and recording.
They also questioned me about my posts, which in no way constituted any call to violence, given that I have gone down in history as the leader of a peaceful revolution renowned throughout the world, and I also led a democratic movement across the whole of Ukraine. My captivity and any new charges are precisely Russia’s revenge, and that of their local hirelings, for successful Georgian reforms, as well as for my struggle to save Georgia and Ukraine from Russian clutches.
They don’t fear me because I was involved in the popular assembly, but rather because if I had truly been involved, far more would have been achieved, entirely peacefully. They fear me because history has made me a symbol of Georgia’s independence and success for the entire world. That’s precisely why they poisoned me in prison, and why they keep imposing new sentences upon me.
Do you know what the main question I was asked was: the one around which the entire interrogation centred? And don’t think I’m joking. What did I mean in last year’s post when I said people should take selfies against the backdrop of Ivanishvili’s shark? I’m convinced this question was written directly by Ivanishvili himself. Do you see where we are?! Look how much he loves his shark, that he’s turned the entire so-called Prosecutor’s Office into defenders of a shark against me.
And if, after today, anyone in Georgia or beyond says I’m not a political prisoner, they truly deserve a closer acquaintance with Ivanishvili’s sharks. So now a new case is being launched against me for ‘harassing Ivanishvili’s shark’. There was the so-called suits case; now the shark case begins. The case will probably be called ‘Ivanishvili’s Shark and the Prosecutor’s Office versus Saakashvili’. I suppose I should have sent a written apology to the shark,” writes Mikheil Saakashvili.
