EU Integration Committee Chair: Past three years validate government’s prudent decisions
“The past three years have validated the Georgian government’s decisions, demonstrating that we could have faced a devastating situation akin to Ukraine’s, had we succumbed to the opposition’s pressure,” Levan Makhashvili, the parliamentary European Integration Committee Chair, has stated.
Makhashvili commented on NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s recent statement, in which Rutte affirmed the Alliance’s commitment to eventual Ukrainian NATO membership while clarifying that such membership was never explicitly conditioned on peace negotiations with Russia.
“This statement affirms that the world has reverted to a Cold War paradigm, characterized by pragmatic international relations where power dictates decisions and shapes new realities,” Makhashvili asserted.
“We recognized this dynamic and assessed the situation realistically, eschewing emotional responses in favour of pragmatic action. While these steps may have seemed unemotional at the time, they were the only responsible choices for our nation. As the past three years have confirmed, the Georgian government’s decisions were sound, and we avoided a potentially catastrophic outcome by resisting the opposition’s agenda.”
“Yesterday’s statements underscore our return to this challenging global landscape. Small nations like ours, with limited resources, must navigate this complex environment with utmost care to safeguard their sovereignty,” Makhashvili concluded.
