EU Integration Committee Chair: NGOs should focus on their mandate, not act as political parties

“It has become a troubling trend that, despite past negative experiences, some individuals stubbornly continue to deceive the public and finance projects that create anxiety and tension within society,” said Levan Makhashvili, a member of the Georgian Dream party and chairperson of the European Integration Committee at the Parliament.

According to Makhashvili, the decision by Georgian Dream is a logical step that will ultimately serve the interests of the public.

“On one hand, non-governmental organizations should focus on their primary responsibilities and refrain from engaging in political activities. On the other hand, political parties must fulfil their roles without becoming mere extensions of certain NGOs. Any group with a declared electoral goal should align its grant proposals with the Georgian government to ensure that these funds genuinely benefit society rather than serve any malicious political agenda.

We have previously witnessed instances where political activities were deceptively labelled as initiatives for raising public awareness, particularly in the regions. Subsequently, political parties would have boasted about receiving funding from various sources, which was then indirectly used to promote political agendas in those areas. Let everyone stick to their responsibilities. NGOs should not function as political parties and political parties should neither serve as extensions of NGOs,” Makhashvili stated.
