EU Enlargement Commissioner Kos: We cannot afford to admit new member who would weaken us
The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has stated that the European Union cannot admit a new member that would weaken it, speaking at an Atlantic Council event.
“We cannot afford to get somebody, a new member state, who will make us weaker. We are not a bunch of friends; we are a community of values. And once you decide that you want to be part of this community of values and enjoy all its benefits, you have to behave, and you have to be a good guy, not a bad guy,” she said.
Kos went on to stress that no country can become a member of the European Union without meeting criteria such as the rule of law, anti-corruption efforts, media freedom, and freedom of expression.
“We have been attacked from different corners, we are being accused that our democracy isn’t a real democracy, that our civilisation is in decline. Gosh, it is really not in a decline. Just look at the elections in Hungary,” she said.
