Economy Ministry: National currency now celebrated on postage stamps

In honour of the 30th anniversary of the introduction of Georgian national currency, the lari, into circulation, the Stamp Commission under the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, at the initiative of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), has issued a commemorative stamp produced by Georgian Post.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the stamp features elements of the lari banknotes and highlights three decades of the currency’s development.

“A postage stamp is more than just a philatelic item. It reflects significant events and achievements for the nation. I believe that the introduction of the lari into circulation marks an important milestone in Georgia’s history. As one of the key symbols of our state, the national currency now also adorns a postage stamp, allowing the entire world to see and appreciate it,” said Guram Guramishvili, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, at the launch of the Georgian Money-National Currency-30 Years stamp.

The event was held at the Ilia Chavchavadze National Library of Georgia, a historic building that housed Georgia’s first central bank, the State Bank of Georgia, during 1920–1921. Natia Turnava, President of the National Bank of Georgia, and Giorgi Eradze, Director General of Georgian Post, delivered speeches on the occasion. As part of the programme, the Director General of Georgian Post presented the first copy of the commemorative stamp to the National Bank.

The Ministry of Economy states that the Georgian stamp will be in circulation from September 2025 and will be available at Georgian Post service centres across the country. The stamp’s designer is Baadur Koblianidze, and the edition comprises 30,000 copies.
