Economy Minister meets Chinese Transport Minister

Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili met with China’s Minister of Transport, Liu Wei, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation across key infrastructure and transport sectors.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the officials explored establishing a joint working group to coordinate cross-sectoral transport initiatives, bringing together relevant agencies and state bodies spanning rail, maritime, road, and civil aviation sectors.

During the meeting, the parties placed special emphasis on the Anaklia Deep Sea Port as a cornerstone infrastructure project for the Middle Corridor. The parties noted that active construction work is currently underway at Anaklia. Minister Kvrivishvili said that around USD 7 billion has been allocated for key infrastructure projects through 2032. Georgia aims to double the capacity of its maritime and rail networks while tripling overall airport throughput capacity, backed by major railway modernisation and rolling stock overhauls.

Discussions also focused on expanding direct air connectivity between Georgia and China, particularly prospects for developing direct routes connecting Tbilisi to Beijing and Guangzhou. To support air traffic expansion, the two sides agreed to maintain ongoing collaboration between the civil aviation authorities of both nations.

The ministers underscored the importance of further developing the Middle Corridor to enhance its efficiency and regional competitiveness. In this context, they highlighted the joint initiative adopted in Beijing during the Global Sustainable Transport Forum, which seeks to boost the capacity, reliability, and competitiveness of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route through deeper inter-state cooperation.
