Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, hosted Director General for the Central and West Asia Department of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Leah Gutierrez, to review key infrastructure projects for the development of the transport sector.

According to the Ministry, ADB executives, specialists, project officers, the Deputy Economy Minister and the General Director of Georgian Railway attended the meeting.

Mariam Kvrivishvili familiarized the ADB representatives with the Georgian government’s transport strategy vision about the projects, which “play a key role in ensuring economic growth and regional connectivity in the next years.”

She focused on the new Tbilisi International Airport, Georgian Railway modernization and the purchase of 50 new locomotives that will significantly increase operational efficiency, reliability, and will contribute to the growth of freight transportation.

“The Georgian side emphasized that the railway, which is the backbone of the Georgian transport system, should play the central role in the transformation of the country into a regional transport and logistics centre, which also means boosting Georgia’s role as a transit country in the Middle Corridor project.

The Middle Corridor is becoming one of the main trade routes, and Georgia is taking decisive steps to develop this corridor, including through major infrastructure projects such as the Anaklia Port,” the Ministry of Economy said.
