Economic leadership reshuffle: PM names new Economy Minister, Davitashvili shifts to strategic advisory role

Mariam Kvrivishvili, former Deputy Minister, will assume the position of Georgia’s Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, replacing Levan Davitashvili, who will take on the role of the Prime Minister’s chief economic advisor and secretary of the Economic Council.

Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a reshuffle of the country’s economic leadership during a briefing at the government administration.

“Mariam Kvrivishvili will assume the position of Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development. You all know her, so no special introduction is needed. As you may recall, Mariam Kvrivishvili is a member of the ruling party’s Political Council and has served as Deputy Minister of Economy, where she has notably led sectors such as tourism and aviation with great success. Today, her responsibilities are expanding, and I am confident that she will perform just as effectively as she did in her previous roles. I wish Mariam Kvrivishvili continued success in her new position as minister,” declared Irakli Kobakhidze.

Mariam Kvrivishvili thanked the Prime Minister for the expressed confidence.

“It is a great honour for me to be a member of this Cabinet and to serve our country’s economic welfare and growth from the position of Economy Minister. All the knowledge and experience I have gained over seven years working in various roles at the Ministry of Economy will, I believe, enable me, alongside my team, to successfully complete ongoing projects and initiatives, while also setting new goals to continue our country’s economic growth. At the same time, I would like to take this opportunity to once again express my sincere gratitude to Levan Davitashvili for the fruitful years we shared, and I wish him great success in his future endeavours,” declared Mariam Kvrivishvili.

Mariam Kvrivishvili is a member of the ruling party’s Political Council. She served as the head of the National Tourism Administration from 2019 to 2020, and since May 24, 2021, she has been serving as the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.

Levan Davitashvili, now former Economy Minister, will assume the posts of the Prime Minister’s chief advisor on economic issues and secretary of the Economic Council.

During today’s briefing, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze also outlined key developments in Georgia’s economic strategy emphasizing the importance of strengthening institutional frameworks to boost growth and investment.

“As you may recall, the country’s economic development remains our top priority. It is fundamental not only to improving the living standards of our citizens but also to the advancement of every sector, the strengthening of Georgia’s democratic institutions, and the reinforcement of our foreign policy positions. To enhance our system for planning and implementing economic policy, we have decided to strengthen the role of the Economic Council. As part of this initiative, we will review its functions and composition. Levan Davitashvili will assume the roles of Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister on economic issues and Secretary of the Economic Council.

Managing the Ministry involves a heavy routine that can limit the focus on strategic priorities. By entrusting Mr. Davitashvili with these new responsibilities, he will be able to dedicate himself fully to accelerating economic growth, attracting investments, and implementing proactive measures for Georgia’s development. Mr. Davitashvili is an exceptionally qualified economist, and we are confident that from this position, he will contribute significantly to our shared goals.

This restructuring will support even greater momentum in Georgia’s economic progress and investment climate. I wish Mr Davitashvili success in this important and demanding role,” the Prime Minister stated.

Former Georgian Economy Minister expressed special gratitude to Prime Minister for their year-long collaboration during challenging times, which ensured economic growth and stable development. According to Davitashvili, he hopes that in the new format it will be possible to further accelerate and coordinate significant strategic projects. As Davitashvili noted, projects that have been started and are at various stages of implementation are very important for the country’s further development.

“Under conditions of high-level coordination, we will have the opportunity for projects to be further accelerated and implemented more quickly. All of this will be very beneficial for the country. I want to take this opportunity and express special gratitude to the founder of the Georgian Dream party, Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, who gave me the opportunity to work in high state positions for years, and we made certain successful contributions to the country’s development in various directions. I think this was a unique chance that is personally unforgettable for me, when you serve your country and can make a small contribution to the country’s development,” Levan Davitashvili stated.

Levan Davitashvili has been serving as Georgia’s Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development since February 9, 2022. Also, he held the position of Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, beginning his tenure on July 12, 2021.
