Doctors attribute ex-president's deteriorating health to psycho-emotional factors

The deterioration of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s health is predetermined by his psycho-emotional state, Vivamedi Clinical Director Zurab Chkhaidze has said.

Mikheil Saakashvili is “utterly intolerant of the conditions in which he is,” and the patient himself has stated that he would only follow the prescriptions if released.

Zurab Chkhaidze explained that the ex-president is given everything he needs for his medical care, which is based on European and American criteria. The clinic has developed new treatment procedures, and high-tech tests are performed. The medical staff at the facility is focused on improving the ex-president’s health.

The medical condition of Georgia’s jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili is worsening due to the serious weight loss, Saakashvili’s attending doctor, Tamar Davarashvili, told a news conference, adding that the “next stage could be an intensive care unit.”

“The patient’s condition is becoming grave, and the trend is further worsening because his weight and body mass is extremely low,” Davarashvili said.

Mikheil Saakashvili has shed 37 kg in the previous ten months, according to endocrinologist Sopo Mebuke. The former president’s weight reduction, however, is unrelated to endocrinologic concerns. Instead of following the physician’s regimen, the patient eats meals of his choosing.

The Tbilisi City Court’s judge, Giorgi Arevadze, dismissed Mikheil Saakashvili’s lawyers’ petition for the ex-president’s jail term postponement or his release on February 6. Mikheil Saakashvili has been in jail for over a year, convicted of abuse of power while in office. Due to his rapidly deteriorating health, he is admitted to the Vivamedi Clinic.
