Deputy Justice Minister: CPT experts identify no mistreatment of prisoners, acknowledge adequate medical services in VivaMedi Clinic

Beka Dzamashvili, Deputy Justice Minister, says that the report published by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) includes information about the visit of experts to the VivaMedi Clinic in March 2023.

Dzamashvili highlighted several significant aspects of the report.

“First of all, it is noted that there were no cases of violence and mistreatment of prisoners, which is a very important conclusion. Also, according to the experts’ assessment, the majority of convicts who undergo treatment at the VivaMedi Clinic are satisfied with the medical service received, and the experts themselves express their opinion that the clinic has created all conditions to provide adequate medical services to prisoners. Here, we are talking about the infrastructure, the medical staff, and the medical service provided.

This is a crucial report, as protecting the prisoners’ rights and especially providing them with adequate medical services is one of the key priorities for the Justice Ministry, and we actively cooperate with all relevant bodies of the Council of Europe,” said Beka Dzamashvili.

The CPT today has published a report on prisoners’ conditions in VivaMedi Clinic, including Georgia’s ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili, and issued recommendations.
