Deputy Interior Minister denies police torture allegations, calls to refrain from spreading false information

“We provided information to the public that before the person was brought to the police department, according to procedures established by law, he was a victim of violence from those citizens and persons with whom he had a conflict,” Deputy Interior Minister of Georgia Alexandre Darakhvelidze told journalists regarding the death of Alan Kakitashvili.

According to him, the Special Investigation Service is probing into Alan Kakitashvili’s death, and it is precisely through investigation that the exact cause of his death must be determined.

The Deputy Interior Minister once again called on interested parties to wait for the completion of the investigation and refrain from spreading false and unverified information.

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs has made statements regarding this incident on multiple occasions. We provided information to the public that before the person was brought to the police department, according to procedures established by law, he was a victim of violence from those citizens and persons with whom he had a conflict. Accordingly, we immediately notified and provided information to the Special Investigation Service, which has launched an investigation.

We are actively cooperating with this agency so that the case can be investigated promptly. The main thing to establish here is what caused his death and what the primary cause was.

I would once again urge all non-governmental organisations and individuals interested in this case to refrain from spreading false or unverified information. Wait for the investigation, and the investigation will provide answers to all questions,” Alexandre Darakhvelidze stated.

Earlier today, some Georgian NGOs made a statement over the fatal accident that occurred in a police building in Tbilisi, which led to the death of Alan Kakitashvili.
