Deputy Head of Hydrometeorological Service says Shovi landslide-like events happen worldwide due to global warming
“Similar events occur not only in Georgia but worldwide due to global warming,” said Irakli Megrelidze, Deputy Head of the Hydrometeorological Service of Georgia at the National Environmental Agency.
He went on to say that at this stage, the danger and risk of recurrence of similar processes are minimal as a large volume [of mudslides] has already come down.
“However, this does not mean that there is no danger because we have many glaciers. Climate change and global warming trigger similar processes,” he added.
At least 11 people have died and 25 are still missing after a landslide hit Georgia’s western resort town of Shovi on Thursday.
