Deputy Chairman of Russian Security Council: Idea of joining Russia still popular in Abkhazia, South Ossetia

“The idea of joining Russia is still popular in Abkhazia, South Ossetia (Georgia’s two occupied regions), and it may be implemented if there are good reasons for that,” said Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.

Medvedev analyzed the events of 2008 calling them “unlearned lessons.”

“In 2008, we stopped the attack on Tbilisi when we managed to eliminate the threats that had arisen and guarantee security. But now the situation is being actively escalated again, apparently in order to create another hotbed of tension near our borders in addition to the Ukrainian flank. Again there are talks about the possible admission of Georgia to NATO,” he said.

According to Medvedev, as ordered, bursts of Russophobia began in this country.

“We do not need a repetition of history-2008. We remain ready to tackle problems at the negotiating table in the spirit of the UN Charter. But if our concern has real outlines, we will not hesitate. In Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the idea of joining Russia is still popular. And it may well be implemented if there are good reasons for that.

“For the West, this turn of events will be another shameful fiasco and another symbol of a catastrophic loss of influence. And history severely punishes all those who neglect its lessons,” he said.
