Defence seeks release of 11 accused protesters, replacement of pre-trial detention

The Tbilisi City Court is currently examining the case of 11 protesters accused of group violence. Lawyers have requested that the preventive measure against Andro Chichinadze, Onise Tskhadadze, and nine other demonstrators be changed from pretrial detention to release.

According to the defence, the examination of evidence confirms the defendants’ innocence. They cite the testimony of the lead investigator, which, they claim, further proves that the accused had no connection with each other and did not commit any crime. The lawyers describe the detentions as politically motivated, asserting that the detainees were defending Georgia’s European future.

The court is currently deliberating on the request to amend the preventive measures. Previously, Judge Nino Galustashvili approved a motion filed by Omar Purtseladze, the lawyer representing Jano Archaia and Guri Mirtskhulava, to incorporate an expert opinion as additional evidence.

The judge also approved the questioning of the expert who authored the report, Marika Toklikishvili, director of the independent forensic centre “New Alternative.”

According to the defence, the expert’s report, dated July 30, 2025, confirms that the video presented as evidence against Archaia was edited and taken out of context. The lawyer added that the objects allegedly held by Archaia and Mirtskhulava cannot be clearly identified. The video, she said, shows a police officer throwing an object, which Mirtskhulava picks up and returns, but the object falls to the ground and does not strike the officer.
