Daphioni movement, students demand TSU rector resignation

Members of the Daphioni movement, along with at least ten students, are calling for the resignation of Jaba Samushia, the Rector of Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University (TSU).

Gathered in one of the auditoriums of TSU’s main building, they plan to host a lecture by Daphioni member Zviad Tsetskhladze on the topic of civil disobedience and boycotts.

“Our goal is the resignation of the TSU Rector and a thorough clearing of the university’s administration. This is not the first instance in which the Rector has aligned with the Georgian Dream and allowed the police regime access to the university, likely in coordination with him. There are two possibilities: either the rector consented, which is shameful, or he did not consent and allowed the riot police to intrude into the building, constituting a violation of the law. Neither scenario is acceptable,” Zviad Tsetskhladze stated.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has clarified that, during the protest on Melikishvili Avenue from November 18-19, no special command centre was established at TSU, nor were employees from the Special Tasks Department present in the university building.

Furthermore, the Ministry explained that no command posts were set up in either the TSU building or its yard, and criminal police officers only entered the university premises after protesters ignited multiple fires.
