Competition Agency fines 40 traders GEL 33,000 for consumer rights violations in first seven months of 2025

In the first seven months of 2025, the Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency received 733 applications related to consumer rights, marking a 45% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Additionally, the agency recorded 2,310 incoming calls, reflecting heightened consumer awareness and concern.

During this period, 87 violations of consumer rights were confirmed in 130 cases. As a result, 40 traders were fined in 75 instances, totalling GEL 33,000, for failing to meet their obligations imposed by the agency.

The agency also secured 94 agreements in 104 cases of conditional commitments, whereby traders pledged to revise their internal policies and restore the rights of consumers harmed by their practices.

Notably, 67% of consumer applications in 2025 pertain to online trading, while 33% relate to in-person purchases. Geographically, Tbilisi leads with 79% of cases, followed by Adjara (5%), Imereti (4%), Kakheti (3%), Kvemo Kartli (2%), and other regions.

“Based on data for the first seven months of 2025, consumers filed 245 refund requests, 231 complaints for repair or replacement of defective items, 125 for restoration of rights in cases of poor service, 44 regarding delayed deliveries, 26 to prohibit misleading activities, and 62 for various other issues,” the agency reports.

Statistically, 73% of these applications concern the wholesale and retail sector, 10% transportation and warehousing, and the remaining 17% various other industries.
