Commissioner Kos urges Georgian government to listen to its people, to be inclusive, and follow people’s wish to become part of Europe
“The disinformation against Europe, the European Union, is not only promoted but also led by those who are in power. So, we condemn those false narratives and we condemn all the attacks on the European institutions, on the representatives of the European institutions, and our member states,” European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated about Georgia in Luxembourg ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
According to the European Commissioner for Enlargement, the situation in Georgia is worrying.
“We will also discuss the worrying developments in Georgia. The people of Georgia have shown in the last three elections, in the ongoing protest, but the polls are also showing that they want a European future, not the government. Their government, apparently, doesn’t listen to its own people and doesn’t want to go the European way. The opponents, as you know, are jailed, and the journalists, civil society organisations are silent. At the same time, the disinformation against Europe, the European Union, is not only promoted but also led by those who are in power. So, we condemn those false narratives and we condemn all the attacks on the European institutions, on the representatives of the European institutions, and our member states. We urge the government of Georgia to listen to its people, to be inclusive, to talk to civil society, and follow their wish to become a part of Europe,” Marta Kos has stated in her doorstep comment.
The EU Foreign Affairs Council is convening in Luxembourg today, chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. The primary topics on the agenda for the EU foreign ministers include the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, developments in Moldova, the EU’s relations with the Indo-Pacific region, and the situation in Sudan. A press conference will be held at the conclusion of the meeting, scheduled for 16:45 Tbilisi time.
