Commission holds final meeting on launching comprehensive state language course in universities

The Commission, established to revive Georgian language studies at universities and led by Deputy Minister of Education, Science, and Youth Affairs Zviad Gabisonia, convened its final meeting.

Gabisonia emphasised that the Georgian language course will include teaching in the Abkhazian language, highlighting its significance. Universities will independently determine the semester during which the course will be implemented across 2025-2028.

This initiative was launched at the initiative of Education Minister Givi Mikanadze and aims to reintroduce a comprehensive undergraduate-level Georgian language program nationwide. The initiative is based on amendments to the Law on Higher Education, approved during the Georgian Parliament’s spring 2025 session.

Staffed by specialists from various fields, the Commission will present the program to the Council of Rectors for approval, incorporating feedback from universities.

After completion of the course successfully, a student will be able to conduct oral and written academic communication perfectly, as well as analyse information of general and professional content, understand the role of the state language and use resources created by modern technologies.

On June 10, the Georgian Parliament approved amendments to the Law on Higher Education, mandating that all undergraduate students must complete a dedicated Georgian language course at their universities. According to the legislative changes, it will become mandatory to take a special course in the state language at the first level of higher education.
