ComCom: All three operators to offer customers 5G cellular internet
5G cellular internet will soon be available to customers of all three operators in Georgia, the Communications Commission (ComCom) announced.
During the third auction held for this purpose, Silknet was declared the top winner of the combined lot. Out of a total value of GEL 48,802,257, the operator paid 30% to the state budget and obtained the license, with the remaining 70% to be covered within one year.
Silknet has committed to extending coverage of the 5G network across all settlements, tourist zones, ports, airports, railways, and highways, per EU technical standards, and ensuring high quality and security.
The auction for 5G implementation comprised a total of 11 lots, which included frequency bands of 700 MHz, 3400–3800 MHz, and 2600 MHz.
Two of these combined lots had identical repayment obligations and pricing.
The Communications Commission has been actively working on the introduction of 5G since 2020. In collaboration with the European Commission and EY experts, it defined essential parameters and conditions for deployment.
In telecommunications, 5G—the “fifth generation” of cellular network technology—is the successor to 4G. Since its global rollout began in 2019, 5G has significantly enhanced various sectors, including healthcare, education, business, agriculture, and infrastructure, transforming the way we live and work.
