Civil activists, politicians rally at Giorgi Rurua’s house

Civil activists and some politicians staged a theatricalized rally at the house of Giorgi Rurua, opposition representative and the founder and shareholder of Mtavari Arkhi (Main Channel) TV. They pasted banners and stickers reading Freedom to Political Prisoners.

The protest participants claimed that Giorgi Rurua, as well as convicts in the David Gareji case, Iveri Melashvili, and Natalia Ilychova, are innocent.

“This is a protest in support of all political prisoners. We call for freedom to free and strong people,” protester Akaki Kobaladze claimed.

On July 30, 2020, Georgian opposition figure Giorgi Rurua was sentenced to four years in prison for the illegal possession and carrying of firearms. A part of the Georgian opposition sees Giorgi Rurua’s case as politically motivated.
