The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg has adopted a declaration focusing on the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Georgia.

According to the Tbilisi City Council, Zurab Abashidze, Deputy Chairman of the Council, addressed the Congress, underscoring the importance of fair elections and human rights protection, while highlighting the government’s efforts in these areas.

Abashidze emphasized the Georgian government’s commitment to European democratic values and its ongoing work to ensure free and fair elections. He pointed to key improvements, such as enhanced operations of the Central Election Commission and accreditation of local civil society organizations to monitor the electoral process.

“We appreciate that these developments are seen as impressive by international observers and developed diplomatic missions, we strongly nurture the peaceful pre-election process are also praised by OSCE. I would like to assure you that the Georgian authorities are committed to ensure Georgian people decide freely and fairly on their own, to which path of those towards the European future. Georgia has made a decision on returning to the European family long ago since we are close in values. In this light, we believe the common grounds with our European partners are stronger than differences in perceiving the developments. So that we can go ahead with our collaboration in favour of advancing democracy locally and in general,” Abashidze stated.
