Citizens Will Be Able to Replace Paper ID Cards with New IDs Free of Charge
Under the initiative of the Minister of Justice, citizens of Georgia who currently have the old paper ID cards, and so far, never had received electronic IDs, within a month (From April 1 to May 1), will have an opportunity to replace their old ID documents with new electronic IDs free of charge.
Citizens will also be able to get a biometric passport of a citizen of Georgia free of charge.
Up to 400 thousand citizens of Georgia owns a paper ID cards.
The citizens willing to benefit from this campaign can address the Public Service Hall, territorial offices of the Public Service Development Agency or Community Centers. Within the scope of this campaign, the citizens will be also freed from payment of photograph fees.
Since 2014, Georgia has a photo-based electoral lists and it is based on biometric documents. Consequently, having a biometric document ensures the principle – “One Voter – One Voice”, and excludes violations at polling station.
Under the initiative of the Minister of Justice, which was aimed at improvement of electoral lists, during the last 5 years, potential voters’ databases have significantly improved: more than 2,600,000 citizens received electronic ID cards, including 1 470 000 ID documents, which have been issued free of charge.
As of today, more than 2 850 000 Georgian citizens own electronic ID cards and in addition, 360,000 individuals own biometric passports of Georgian citizenship.
