Candidate PM says working without debate not to be easy

It would not be easy to work without discussion and debate. Therefore, we must do everything to resolve this problem and fill this part of the parliament in the nearest future. It is not the ruling team’s ambition. Our citizens demand this. They decided that nine parties, 60 opposition MPs, should be present at the parliament, Georgian Prime Minister nominee Giorgi Gakharia said during his speech at the plenary session of the Parliament on Thursday ahead of the confidence vote.

Giorgi Gakharia noted that it is not comfortable to work at the parliament without the opposition since any best decision should be taken based on a healthy discussion and dispute.

“Today, we meet in the format of a plenary session, and, of course, it is a great honor and responsibility for us to debate here the government’s plan for the coming years. Unfortunately, a part of the session hall is empty simply because the opposition parties are not present. Journalists asked me whether I feel comfortable with the single-party parliament, the absence of opposition in the session hall, or the confidence vote by one party only. Of course, it is not comfortable. We understand that any right decision must be taken based on a healthy discussion and dispute. We had a pretty good experience in this direction for years. We have never been intimidated by substantive discussion and debates. Furthermore, it is not comfortable for our citizens who voted for nine parties and decided that there should be 60 opposition seats in this parliament”, Gakharia said and added that these doubles the government’s responsibility.

Candidate PM emphasized the importance of building a European future.

“The approach, all or nothing, is not a democratic approach and has nothing to do with Europeanness, but whether we are alone in this hall or not, we must continue to move towards our European future”, he added.

Georgian parliament is about to give a confidence vote to a new Cabinet and governmental program Building of a European State.
