Burchuladze affirms no action against ex-president Zourabichvili, stresses her role in legitimising elections

“We are not acting against Salome Zourabichvili. On the contrary, we believe she is the person who should contribute legitimacy to the elections,” a civil activist, Paata Burchuladze, told reporters.

According to Burchuladze, the only difference between his movement and the Resistance Platform is that they intend to pursue more radical actions than the current approach.

“We do not oppose Salome Zourabichvili. Instead, we see her as a key figure whose recognition is essential for legitimising the elections. We do not confront her; in fact, people affiliated with the Resistance Platform come to us for discussions, and we engage with them. We share similar ideas. The only distinction is that we aim to act more aggressively than the current trend.

Time is running out. Persisting at a slow pace only gives Ivanishvili more opportunity to turn Georgia into Belarus. While I cannot say the processes are entirely incorrect, they are progressing too slowly. More decisive action is necessary. Every day, people gather on Rustaveli Avenue, demanding greater urgency. This situation cannot continue; blocking Rustaveli Avenue is a crucial step.

We are not a formal party, but a movement, though not officially registered, under the name Rustaveli Avenue. Registration is not essential. Our goal is to rally the people to common sense and awareness of what is happening, and I believe most everyone agrees,” he said.

Burchuladze also mentioned that Giorgi Gakharia, leader of the Gakharia for Georgia party, is informed of these developments, though he has yet to participate in negotiations for reasons unknown.

“I do not personally know Giorgi Gakharia, but I met him when I visited various political parties and invited their participation. He told me he would not sit at the negotiation table for reasons he chose not to disclose. I understand those reasons, and if he wishes, he can share the details. However, he assured me that if elections are held in September, he would participate in those elections rather than in the Georgian Dream’s. He said he would not be involved in organisational matters but would stay informed about how things unfold. I cannot speak on his behalf, but I understand his position and do not blame him for it,” he concluded.
