British, French and German diplomats visit occupation line to honour victims of 2008 war

The Ambassadors of the United Kingdom and France, accompanied by the First Secretary of the German Embassy, visited villages adjacent to the occupation line to pay tribute to the victims of the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, the Embassy of France in Georgia announced.

According to the diplomatic mission, the delegation visited sites that stand as symbols of local resilience and endurance. The Ambassadors emphasised that the tragedy of the August War must never be forgotten, reaffirming their unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We visited three pillars of local resilience: The War Museum in Ergneti which preserves moving personal testimonies and objects documenting the devastating human toll of the war. The Nikozi Rock Climbers Club which creates vital opportunities and a safe space for local youth directly affected by the conflict. And the Diocese of Nikozi where we met Metropolitan Isaiah at a cathedral complex that he and his team rebuilt from wartime destruction – a symbol of resilience, faith and community .

The events of August 2008 must not be forgotten. Russia’s continued military presence and occupation of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia continue to undermine Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to divide communities.

Our Message today: This visit took place during the so-called “presidential elections” in the Tskhinvali region/ South Ossetia, which we do not recognise. Russia’s creeping political integration and steps toward full annexation of Georgia’s occupied territories remain deeply concerning.

Remembering is not only about the past. It is also about standing with the people who continue to live with the consequences of occupation every single day,” the French Embassy stated.
