Azerbaijan's National Assembly Speaker honours enduring legacy of His Holiness Ilia II in promoting humanity and interfaith harmony

The Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, Sahiba Gafarova, has sent a letter of condolence to the Chairman of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, following the passing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

In her letter, Gafarova emphasises that they will always hold in deep respect the substantial contributions His Holiness made towards fostering peace, solidarity, and interfaith dialogue across the Caucasus.

“It is with profound sadness that we received the news of the demise of the eminent religious leader, His Holiness Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II. We shall forever remember with great reverence his tireless work for the betterment of humanity, his dedication to promoting peace and unity, and his steadfast efforts to strengthen friendly relations between our nations and peoples. We share in your grief over this immense loss. On behalf of myself and all members of the Milli Mejlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, I extend our heartfelt condolences to you, the members of parliament, and the people of your esteemed country,” the condolence letter states.

Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia passed away on March 17 at the age of 93. A period of national mourning was declared in Georgia. The Patriarch was borne in solemn procession from the Patriarchal Residence to the Holy Trinity Cathedral. He is to be buried at Sioni Cathedral on March 22.
