Archaeological expedition begins on Rustavi Fortress territory

With the support of Georgia’s Ministry of Culture and Rustavi City Hall, an archaeological expedition has begun to study the 9th-12th century palace discovered on the territory of Rustavi’s historic fortress, which will be the largest-scale project in the city’s history.

A ceremonial event was held in Rustavi marking the start of the expedition, with Rustavi Mayor Nino Latsabidze presenting the project and discussing its historical significance.

The oldest settlement on the territory of Rustavi’s historic fortress dates back to the Middle Bronze Age. In historical sources, Rustavi, along with Mtskheta, Urbnisi, and Uplistsikhe, is mentioned as a city from the 4th century AD.
