Aleko Elisashvili refuses to include his name on list of prisoners to be released
Aleko Elisashvili, a member of Lelo – Strong Georgia, says he wants to facilitate the release of those he considers unjustly imprisoned. In a letter sent from prison, Elisashvili stated that he does not want his name to be considered among those proposed for release and called on both Georgian and international actors to exclude him from any list of political prisoners.
“I want to facilitate the process of releasing people who have been unjustly imprisoned. This is my principled position,” Elisashvili wrote.
He noted that, despite facing serious charges and a potential 15-year sentence, he considers his case separate and does not wish it to hinder broader efforts aimed at releasing other detainees. According to Elisashvili, his inclusion on such lists could complicate negotiations and slow down the process.
“I, Aleko Elisashvili, refuse to include my name on the list of prisoners to be released. I call on everyone—Georgians and foreigners—not to consider me on any list of political prisoners,” he said.
Elisashvili also expressed hope that individuals he describes as political prisoners and prisoners of conscience will be released, adding that he would follow such developments from prison.
