Majority MP Gia Volski: UNM needs Melia behind bars to speculate

The first vice-speaker of the Georgian parliament, Gia Volski, believes the United National Movement needs Nika Melia in prison to continue speculating on this topic.

According to Volski, jailed Nika Melia brings no political dividends for the ruling Georgian Dream party.

“Our political approach stands, but the legal side of this case requires certain procedures. Some party members believe Nika Melia’s imprisonment would harm the Georgian Dream and create tension within society. Certain political views clash in the legal field. Law must be enforced. Opponents think that law enforcement is against their very idea, and the idea is that there is no law, court and judicial structures that could be obeyed. Who needs Nika Melia in prison? That is what the UNM needs to continue speculating on this issue,” Volski said.

According to the MP, the lawyers are demonstratively asking and trying to keep Melia in jail, thus creating a deadlock so that they do not come to the negotiating table.

Tbilisi City Court Judge Nino Chakhnashvili has remanded Nika Melia, accused of organizing violence in the June 20-21 case, in custody.
