Investigation into June 20-21 developments will continue under article stipulating rebellion intended to overthrow or seize state power

The investigation into June 20-21 developments will continue under the article stipulating rebellion intended to overthrow or seize the state power through violence, – a special briefing has been held at the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia today.

“The Office of the Prosecutor General of Georgia and the Central Criminal Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia proceed with the investigation on the fact of organising, leading and participating in a group violence committed on June 20-21, 2019 in front of the Parliament under Article 225 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

Within the above investigation, on the basis of activities,  the investigative body came to the conclusion that on June 20-21, 2019, certain individuals intended to violently overthrow state authority and seize the power through revolt.

Accordingly, legal qualification of the criminal case has been specified and the investigation in the Ministry of Internal Affairs will continue under the Article 225 and the 3rd part of Article 315, which implies ‘Rebellion intended to overthrow or seize the state power through violence that results in death or other grave consequences’.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia continues the intensive investigation into the organization of and participation in violence by the member of the Parliament of Georgia, Nikanor Melia. He is charged under Article 225 of the Criminal Code. Additional investigative actions were conducted in the case and witnesses, as well as victims, have been interviewed. At this time, about 60 people gave testimony to the investigation”, – the representative of the Prosecutor’s Office stated.
