Prosecutor's Office arrests six police officers over violent abuse of power in Gori

The Prosecutor’s Office has arrested six individuals in connection with the violent abuse of official authority by police officers.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia, an investigation carried out by the investigative division of the Shida Kartli and Mtskheta-Mtianeti District Prosecutor’s Office, in coordination with the General Inspection of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, established that the accused had used unlawful violence whilst effecting the detention of a victim on May 27, 2026, in the city of Gori, thereby grossly exceeding their official powers.

As a result of the violence committed, the victim’s rights were significantly violated, and he suffered physical harm.

“Based on evidence gathered in the course of an investigation conducted within the shortest possible timeframe, the accused were arrested on May 28. Charges will be brought against them within the period prescribed by law under Article 333, Part 3, Subparagraph (b) of the Criminal Code, exceeding official authority through the use of violence, which carries a custodial sentence of between five and eight years. Given the significant public interest in this matter, we will provide the public with periodic updates on the progress of the investigation,” the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia said in a statement.

Yesterday, video footage emerged showing officers from the Shida Kartli Police Service physically assaulting two individuals during a detention in the so-called Kombinati neighbourhood of Gori. Reports have also emerged that one of those detained had had a bladed weapon.
