Young man charged with assaulting police officer sent to jail
Anatoli Gigauri, a young man indicted by the Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office for assaulting a police officer during the protest on Rustaveli Avenue on November 25, has been remanded in custody following a ruling by Judge Lela Maridashvili of the Tbilisi City Court.
The defence proposed to secure bail for the accused in the amount of GEL 10,000; however, the judge denied the motion. Gigauri faces a prison sentence ranging from 4 to 7 years under Article 353 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
During the hearing, the defence argued that Gigauri was acting in self-defence and that the incident occurred at the moment he was being taken into custody.
The defence team plans to request an investigation from the Special Investigation Service, while the Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that further investigation into the case is ongoing.
