Vice Speaker Volski: We believe Berlin will thoroughly analyse the root causes behind claims of strain in Georgian-German ties

“We hope the new German Ambassador will arrive with instructions to work towards normalising relations, rather than escalating tensions as Peter Fischer did,” stated Vice Speaker of Parliament Gia Volski.

According to Volski, the government’s sole objective is to restore ties with Germany to a normal footing.

“Our only interest is to return relations with Germany to a normal course, given that our historical ties have been overwhelmingly positive not only politically, but across numerous sectors, including the economy, culture, education, and beyond. We have never altered our stance, nor have we shifted our policy on the international stage.

As for the assertion we have just heard, claiming that Georgia has problems with Germany, we believe this situation will be carefully analysed in Germany to understand where these issues originate and what lies at their core. We hope that the incoming ambassador will arrive with appropriate instructions to foster normalised relations, rather than exacerbating matters as Peter Fischer did, creating an environment where the German Embassy became directly involved in encouraging certain extremist groups,” Volski stated.

For context, the German Embassy in Georgia released the initial statement from the newly appointed Ambassador, Barbara Voss:

“The current tension strains Germany’s and the EU’s relations with Georgia. Nevertheless, Germany’s active support for the country’s democratic and pro-European course remains as strong as ever,” Voss stated.
