Vice Speaker Volski: EU has different attitudes towards Georgia compared to Armenia

“It is a primitive assessment to suggest that Armenia is striving towards the European Union and Georgia is not. The reality is simply that the EU has a different attitude towards Armenia compared to Georgia,” stated the First Vice-Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Gia Volski.

According to Volski, the EU’s stance towards Georgia on certain key issues has, in several instances, been quite negative.

“If we examine the demands placed upon us, we realise that Georgia is envisioned in the role of cannon fodder when it comes to foreign policy, for instance, regarding a confrontation with Russia, whether economic or military. When we talk about the EU’s attitude towards Georgia, this has become considerably clearer in recent times. As far as the aspiration towards the European Union is concerned, both Armenia and Georgia share a similar drive. Yet, Georgia has far more positive indicators and demonstrates considerably higher European standards than Armenia or indeed any other candidate country.

We wish Armenia every success. We stand ready to share all of our experience with them, though ‘stand ready’ is perhaps the wrong phrase, as we are in a state of continuous cooperation. Our aspiration towards the EU is similar in every direction; however, Brussels has certain interests which, in many cases, do not align with Georgia’s strategic interests,” Gia Volski stated.
