Vice Speaker Volski amazed by massive corruption involving former Defence Minister Burchuladze
“I would never have imagined in any circumstances that such a massive corruption system had been established, with everything revolving around Juansher Burchuladze. This is a bad fact for us too, but it would have been far worse to conceal and not present the reality that exists,” declared Parliament’s First Deputy Speaker Gia Volski.
According to him, the issue of corruption is of particular importance for the country, regardless of the perspective from which it is viewed; any nation will ultimately collapse if corruption persists.
“What happened is a bad fact, I never allowed for this. I’ve met Juansher once or twice, but I would never have imagined in any circumstances that such a massive corruption system had been established with everything revolving around him. This is a bad fact for us too. But it would have been a far worse fact to conceal and not present the reality that exists. The issue of corruption, however it may be analysed, regardless of the perspective from which it is viewed, is particularly important for the country.
That’s why Georgia is among the world’s leading countries in anti-corruption indicators. Any country will collapse if corruption exists. Whether in the past or present, all this must be strictly controlled, assessed, and strict measures must be taken. Let’s see what decision the court makes. Let’s see what position the defence has. The investigation will show everything. We must not allow anyone to have doubts about attempts to cover up any crime,” Gia Volski declared.
Asked whether former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili will be arrested, Gia Volski responds that he cannot imagine Irakli Garibashvili could be involved in any crime.
“I’ve known Irakli Garibashvili for a long time. He was young, quite capable, and his family had quite a serious income. Therefore, I would be surprised and cannot allow that he might be involved in any corrupt system. Generally, the formula is this: you shouldn’t rule out anything in life, but we are human beings, we have our weaknesses, and you might rule it out after all. Let’s see. In any case, whoever it may be, any person who opposes the state with such an evil crime as corruption will be held accountable,” Gia Volski declared.
