Vice-Speaker: Georgia–EU meeting postponed for unclear reasons, EU avoids talks as it lacks evidence for claims
According to Vice-Speaker of Parliament Giorgi Kakhiani, the Georgia–EU dialogue meeting scheduled to take place in Brussels has been postponed for reasons that remain unclear.
Kakhiani described the EU’s decision as an attempt to avoid discussion.
“We have been waiting for this meeting, which has been in preparation for about six months. Against the background of completely unfounded statements about alleged rights violations and democratic backsliding in Georgia—claims for which we have heard no evidence—this meeting would have given us the opportunity to clarify our position with EU representatives and to hear any evidence they might have,” Kakhiani said.
“The meeting was postponed for a completely incomprehensible reason. This makes us think they are avoiding the discussion because they have no evidence for the accusations they often direct at us. They did not openly state the reason, but everything suggests this is an attempt to avoid direct dialogue, where we could present our positions clearly. It appears they have no concrete arguments to support the claims they frequently make. We had high expectations for this meeting, as it could have contributed to improving relations, which, unfortunately, are currently in an undesirable state,” he added.
The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Georgia–EU human rights dialogue scheduled for November 21, 2025, in Brussels was postponed at the decision of the EU side. According to the ministry, the postponement indicates that Brussels is not ready to hear Georgia’s positions.
